How do I grant someone else access to my IG account?
You can authorise someone else to deal on your spread betting, CFD, share dealing or ISA account by granting them power of attorney (POA). This is the authorisation of one person to act on behalf of another. The person authorising the other to act on their account is known as the ‘donor’ (the person with the power), while the one authorised to act is called the ‘attorney’ (the person receiving the power).
There are two types of POA: limited and full.
Limited power of attorney
You can grant limited POA to a family member, a friend or an unregulated company. The attorney is allowed to deal on the account, set preferences, add exchanges and change rollover instructions. They aren’t allowed to make any changes to contact details, make payments or withdrawals or change statement/bet confirmation settings.
How to apply for limited POA
The person you wish to grant account access to must also hold an account with us. If they don’t already, they can apply online. If the individual does have an account with us, you can then complete the limited power of attorney form for your specific account type. It details the functions that can be performed by the person you appoint and the terms relating to this. It’s an important document, so please read it carefully.
You can email the completed form to helpdesk.uk@ig.com. We aim to have the POA set up on the same day as we’ve received it; however, it can take longer. Ensure all information has been filled out on the form, as this will help prevent delays.
You can’t grant POA over a stocks ISA held within an IG Smart Portfolio.
How to access the donor’s account
Someone with limited POA can access the donor’s account by logging in to their own account first and then switching to the donor account in the top-left corner of the platform. The donor should not disclose their login details to the attorney.
Full power of attorney
Full power of attorney is when power is given to an introducing broker or a regulated person or company to trade on behalf of the donor. The donor authorises the attorney to do all things that the donor themself can do in relation to the account, including, without limitation:
- Opening and closing the account
- Opening, editing and closing positions done on the account
- Making payments to the account and requesting withdrawals from the account. We don’t accept third-party payments, so payments/withdrawals made by the attorney on behalf of the donor must be made to and from bank accounts belonging to the donor
How to apply for full POA
You’ll need to complete the full power of attorney form for your specific account type. It details the functions that can be performed by the person you appoint and the terms relating to this. It’s an important document, so please read it carefully.
