Singapore Airlines unveils new digital innovation lab, KrisLab
KrisLab will be used as a workspace for the carrier’s staff to collaborate and develop ideas on technology such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, and data analytics with external partners and start-ups.
Singapore Airlines (SIA) unveiled its digital innovation lab on Tuesday, an initiative that is part of the group’s investment programme as it strives to compete to become a leading digital airline.
Called KrisLab, the lab follows the airline’s digital innovation blueprint initiative launched in 2018 which will see the airline work to develop and nurture the digital aviation and travel technology community in Singapore, through collaborative partnerships with organisations and partners.
KrisLab will be used as a workspace for SIA’s staff to collaborate and develop ideas with external partners, start-ups, and established incubators and accelerators to support SIA in its attempt to ‘fully embrace digitalization and technology in all aspects of its business operations’.
The group said it will tap on its digital capabilities and the collaboration with partners to help solve its business challenges.
SIA explores blockchain, AI, and data analytics
SIA said technologies such as blockchain, mixed reality devices, artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics, among others, are used and explored by staff as they develop their digital initiatives.
Currently, an innovation being explored at KrisLab involves the use of virtual reality technology to allow SIA’s designers to step on board and explore or change future cabin design concepts quickly, the group revealed.
SIA also shared that its digital innovation lab team has been working with local research institutions such as the Agency for Science, Technology and Research and the National University of Singapore on research in deep-tech areas. According to SIA, the research will give it a competitive edge against other carriers in areas such as revenue management, smart seats, virtual training, and predictive maintenance for aircraft.
The launch of KrisLab is a significant step forward in the group’s digital transformation journey, Singapore Airlines’ chief executive Goh Choon Phong said. ‘We are fully committed to further enhancing our digital capabilities by providing the right tools and infrastructure for staff to develop their ideas.’
