Trump to meet with Kim Jung Un in second iconic meeting
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has arrived in Vietnam on Tuesday, preparing for talks with US president Donald Trump, who is set to arrive Tuesday evening.
Trump and Un will try to reach an agreement on a North Korean pledge to give up its nuclear weapon programme. Trump is due to arrive in Vietnam on Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday the two leaders will meet for a brief one-on-one meeting, followed by a social dinner, where they will both have two guests and interpreters, according to White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders.
The meeting follows the historic first sitting between Trump and Ung in Singapore eight months ago.
What’s expected at the meeting?
While there’s no expectation of a final deal on North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme, the US hopes the second meeting could lead to a declaration that the Korean war is officially over.
The US also expects significant movement by Kim towards denuclearisation, but no solid end-deal is to be expected.
Kim and Trump are also due to hold separate talks with Vietnamese leaders.
Trump keeps meeting expectations low
Trump told reporters he and Kim would have "a very tremendous summit", however, the US president set the expectations low in a speech on Sunday night.
‘I'm not in a rush. I don't want to rush anybody,' he said. ‘I just don't want testing. As long as there's no testing, we're happy.’ Trump said on Sunday.
Trump has stressed the benefits to denuclearisation, tweeting on Monday ‘With complete denuclearization. North Korea will rapidly become an economic powerhouse. Without it, just more of the same. Chairman Kim will make a wise decision!’ Trump said on Twitter.
A South Korean presidential spokesman said on Monday that an agreement to a formal end of the Korean war could be possible, through an armistice.
The two leaders have also discussed the possibility of a political declaration stating that the war is over.
