FAQs

Who is IG?

We’re Australia’s No.1 choice for contract for difference (CFD) trading.1 Our offerings enable you to explore countless opportunities through access to over 17,000 financial markets. You can trade or invest on our platform. When trading CFDs with us, you’ll take a position on the price movements of financial assets without owning them. When investing in shares and ETFs with us, on the other hand, you’ll do so via a share trading account.

Our business model is built around wanting you to trade or invest profitably – we don’t make any money from client losses. IG Australia is part of IG Group Holdings Plc, which is a member of the FTSE 250 that’s regulated in the UK by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). We take measures to ensure that your money and assets are protected with us, eg keeping them in accounts that are separate from our own and not using them in the course of our business activities.

How can I start trading?

You can start trading with us by following these steps:

  1. Create a live account and fund it when you’re ready
  2. Select your opportunity after learning about trading and conducting careful analysis of the market you’re interested in
  3. Buy if you think the price of that particular market will rise (if you are trading on a CFD account, you can also sell if you think the market will fall or take a neutral stance with US-listed options via our platform.)
  4. Select your position size
  5. Take steps to manage your risk
  6. Open, monitor and close your position

Which platforms can I trade on?

There are several trading platforms available to you. With us, you can use the desktop or mobile version of our platform. You can also trade through specialist third-party platforms with us, eg algorithmic and automated trading platforms like MetaTrader 4, ProRealTime and TradingView.

Where can I find the new economic calendar?

On desktop, the calendar can be found on the left-hand navigation towards the bottom of our web trading platform. On mobile, you can access it in the ‘account’ menu of our app. Both are in the same place as their existing calendar.

What’s new?

Our new economic calendar has a bold new design and features that will help you trade confidently. This includes customisation that enables you to filter market-moving events in over 40 countries and rank their importance by ‘high’, ‘medium’, and ‘low’. You also have access to a breath of information on market-moving events and can enjoy using the economic calendar within the platform.

How will these features benefit me?

Our new calendar has a wealth of historical data on events that you can use to adjust your positions to manage risk, identify trading opportunity on volatile markets and make informed strategic trading decisions to avoid unexpected losses. Filtering events by importance lets you detect incidents that could impact and cause volatility in the market. To make things even better, you can now add the economic calendar to your workspace ensuring you don’t miss sight of important market events when they happen.

When will alerts be available on the new calendar?

We’re working on the build of the alert functionality and will be available soon. Please note that as of 24 October 2024, alerts on the old economic calendar will be inactive.

How do I set up alerts on the new economic calendar once the functionality is available?

  • Log into your account
  • Go to the economic calendar page
  • Choose the market event you’d like to track
  • Customise your alert preferences according to ‘high’, ‘medium’ or ‘low’ and save them

When will the old calendar be phased out?

As of 24 October 2024, the old economic calendar will be phased out and no longer accessible – the new calendar will be operational.

Why are we phasing out the old economic calendar?

We’re introducing a new economic calendar to enhance your trading journey and opportunities by offering better functionality and user experience.
