How does zero commission affect returns?

Paying commissions could reduce the actual amount you use to open a position, which may well reduce your returns over time. Commission-free trading, on the other hand, could maximise the amount you can put down and increase the potential to grow your returns, especially by compounding over time.

The effects of commission-free trading over time

To show the effects of compounding when using commission-free trading vs a similar investment with a $10 commission over a 10-year period, we’ve compiled the table below as an example.

The assumption made is an opening deposit of $1000, with monthly deposits of $100 and an annual return of 10%. To maximise growth, an assumption is made that returns are re-invested into the portfolio. Zero commission trading yielded an additional $2042.02 in returns compared to trading with a $10 commission.

Note that you may incur some charges and fees when trading with us. Fee rates may be higher when selecting instant conversion.

Zero commission $10 commission fee
Opening deposit $1000 $990
Return earned on deposits $9754.58 $8922.56
Total return value $22,754.58 $20,712.56
Difference $2042.02
