Large cap stands for large capitalisation and is a term used to group stocks and shares. Sitting above mid-cap and small-cap stocks, large-cap stocks generally have a valuation, or market capitalisation, of more than $10 billion.
Most stock index providers have large-cap indices. For example, the FTSE 100 is a large-cap index comprising 100 biggest stocks listed on the London Stock Exchange by market value, while the FTSE 250 is a mid-cap index and the FTSE Small Cap is, as the name suggests, a small-cap index.
