FAQs

What are the tax benefits of a stocks and shares ISA?

If you’re a UK resident over the age of 18, you’ll have a tax-free ISA allowance of £20,000 during the tax year.1 You can invest all of this in multiple stocks and shares ISAs, cash ISAs or split it among the account types.

If you invest in a stocks and shares ISA, any profits you make will be free from capital gains tax.1 There’s also no tax to pay on any income from dividends, even if you’re a higher- or additional-rate tax payer. Outside of an ISA, you'd only get a £500 tax-free dividend income allowance – anything above that, and higher- and additional-rate taxpayers, would pay 33.75% and 39.35% respectively.

What can I invest in with an IG stocks and shares ISA?

You can invest in over 13,000 global shares and ETFs with our stocks and shares ISA. Our share dealing ISA gives you full control over your investments, while our Smart Portfolio ISAs are fully managed by our in-house experts using asset allocation insights from BlackRock.

See all our charges and fees, or view our complete shares list (PDF).

Can I transfer my existing stocks and shares ISA to IG?

Yes. You can easily transfer an existing stocks and shares or cash ISA held with another provider to us. Your ISA will retain its remaining allowance and tax benefits,1 and there are no hidden charges from us for transferring.4 Find out how to transfer an existing ISA into our share dealing ISA.

Can I open more than one stocks and shares ISA?

Yes. New ISA rules that came into effect on 6 April 2024 allow you to open and pay into multiple stocks and shares ISAs each tax year. If you split your contributions among many accounts, you still need to stick to the maximum annual contribution of £20,000.

However, note that some providers might not adopt this rule as it’s optional under the new guidelines. We’ve applied it to our accounts, so you can open multiple stocks and shares ISAs in a single tax year if you have one with us.

Do you offer junior ISAs?

No, we don’t currently offer junior ISAs.

Do you offer flexible ISAs?

Yes, we’ve offered flexible ISAs via our online platform since April 2016. Open an account to get started, or find out more on our Help and Support site.
