Top FAQs

What is share dealing?

Share dealing is the buying and selling of a company’s shares, usually with the intention of making a profit.

With IG, ‘share dealing’ refers specifically to our non-leveraged investment service, as opposed to spread betting or trading CFDs on a share price. Find out more on our Help and Support site.

How does share dealing work?

Shares are bought and sold on a global network of exchanges, referred to collectively as ‘the stock market’. Shares can usually only be traded when the relevant exchange is open.

With IG, you’ll deal shares through our online platform. Simply create a share dealing account, fund your account and log in. You’ll have access to thousands of markets in just a few clicks.

How long does it take to withdraw funds once I have sold shares?

We’ll deposit into your account as soon as we receive a dividend payment from any shares you own. The payment will appear as cash on your ledger. To find out more, take a look at our Help and Support site.

2 Physical share dematerialisation fee is £100 (inclusive of VAT) per certificate. Electronic shares are transferred free of charge. IG SIPPs are administered by James Hay, who charge a £205 annual fee and may charge for transferring investments not currently held in a SIPP. You may be out of the market for a period while your transfer takes place.

3 Tax laws are subject to change and depend on individual circumstances. Tax law may differ in a jurisdiction other than the UK.

4 You'll be charged a custody fee of £24 per quarter if you hold assets on a share dealing account or ISA at the end of each quarter. However, it is dependent on your trading activity, and commissions paid during the quarter will be deducted from the fee. You will be exempt from the charge if you:

• Deal three or more times on your share dealing account during the quarter

• Hold assets worth £15,000 or more across your IG Smart Portfolio accounts at the end of the quarter

If a custody fee is due, we'll debit it from your share dealing account first. If sufficient funds aren't available, we'll then deduct from your ISA account. If there is insufficient cash on both accounts, the account with the highest asset value will be taken overdrawn.
